The following is the first in a series on Independent School District 549 retirees for the 2023 school year.
After first retiring, Kevin Kosiak came back when Independent School District 549 found itself in a bind after a departure from the music department. Kosiak helped fill the void for the 2022-23 school year, but will now be heading back to enjoy retirement, once again.
Kosiak spent 26 years with Perham Public Schools during his teaching career. Prior to that, Kosiak taught at Springfield Public Schools from 1984-1990 and Bethany Christian School from 1990-1992.
Kosiak taught Choir, General Music and Band during his time with ISD 549. When asked what accolades he won, Kosiak responded in his general humorous way of saying he didn’t get fired, he was close, but never fired and thought he won a Yellowjacket award once.
Kosiak said his favorite memory is meeting his wife, Robin, who was a special education teacher. They have been together for 28 years.
Kosiak had simple advice for new professionals in the field which is to enjoy every moment, they go by awfully quickly.
Kosiak plans on continuing to remodel their home during his retirement, practice his instruments and fry chicken at the Central Market Deli in Detroit Lakes as well as some traveling.
He delivered more familiar humor when he offered this bit of advice for retirees, “After you retire, when your caller ID says it’s Ehren Zimmerman, don’t pick up.”
