The following is the third in a series on Independent School District 549 retirees for the 2023 school year.
While his time with the Perham Public Schools was short-lived, it was definitely memorable. Prairie Wind Middle School sixth grade teacher Garry Grewe announced his retirement recently.
Grewe spent most of his teaching career having a positive impact on students in and out of the classroom. Grewe taught in Perham for five of his 40 years. His career featured stops in Sebeka, Staples-Motley, Park Rapids, Bemidji and Pequot Lakes. The majority of his teaching career was spent with the Pequot Lakes School District.
Grewe started his time in the district as a fourth grade teacher before moving into the sixth grade house for his final years with Perham Public Schools. He also brought his expertise to the gym floor, coaching seventh and eighth grade boys basketball in the program as well, while serving on several different athletic committees in Perham such as the Home Run Club and the Perham Athletic Association.
Grewe kept it simple when asked what his favorite memory of working at Perham Public Schools was and he said it was the people he worked with.
Grewe formed great friendships and bonds with many of the staff and students during his tenure with Perham Public Schools and gave this simple advice to new or young staff members, “treat other people the way you would like to be treated,” he said.
Grewe does not have any big extravagant retirement plans, besides taking care of his own kids. He said he was grateful for his time in the district and thanked them for hiring him five years ago.
