Perham Public Schools will be participating in the Minnesota Walk, Bike, Fun to School Day which will be on Wednesday, October 12.
Students, staff and community members are being asked to help participate in the event that helps promote physical activity.
It will begin at 7:45 a.m. and go until 8:15 a.m. The drop off site will be at the corner of Southwest 7th Street and Coney Street, which is just one block south of Perham Health.
Perham Public Schools District Wellness Coordinator Jake Olson said that in the past 40 years walking or biking to school has gone down 30 percent.
“KIds are not as active as they were in the past. Kids who walk or bike meet their recommended daily physical activity,” Olson said. “Students are more likely to have a healthy body weight. Being active with things like this helps students be engaged and ready to learn when they get to school. They also have higher performing students in the classroom. It is also proven that active students are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.”
Olson said this is an event they hope to continue in the future. It was on hiatus the past few years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Interest in the event is high among students in the Perham School District, which means the need for volunteers to help coordinate is high as well. If interested in volunteering for this event, contact Olson at jolson@perham.k12.mn.us
