On Tuesday, September 25, Robert (Bob) Shimek from the White Earth Reservation came to the Perham High School to share stories of his Native American culture and history with junior, senior, and seventh grade students. James Mulcahy, the Native American Coordinator for Perham schools, contacted Mr. Shimek to speak to the youth in Jennifer Bain’s American Literature English class, Aron Velde’s Myths and Legends class, and Hannah Levenhagen’s seventh grade Social Studies class about the importance of storytelling and preserving our heritage. The classes are currently studying Native American stories, history, and culture, and the students had an opportunity to ask Mr. Shimek questions about the material they have learned and discussed in class. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students, and they were excited to listen and learn from Mr. Shimek.
