    2018 Community Scholarship Program Awards Graduates with Over $115,000

    On Wednesday, May 2, Perham High School hosted the annual Community Scholarship Program. It is remarkable to see all of the community giving and support that is shared with our students. We are proud to announce that over $115,000 will be provided in scholarships to our students!

    We are thankful for all of the different organizations, memorial funds, businesses, and families that provide funds for our students.

    And a special thank you to KLN Family Brands who has generously offered a $250 scholarship for every PHS graduating senior that intends on pursuing their education after high school!

    Royale B. & Eleanor A. Arvig Scholarship

    Rotary Scholarships

    Perham Rotary awards six $1,250 academic scholarships to graduating seniors; four to the Perham High School, and one each to New York Mills High School and Frazee High School. In addition, the Perham Rotary Service Above Self scholarship in the amount of $2,000 is awarded to a Perham High School graduating senior that best exemplifies the service club motto through his/her community service involvement.     Perham Local MSEA Unit You Deserve This Scholarship

    Minnesota School Employee Association (MSEA) is a union of nearly 6,000 classified public school employees from over 60 school districts in Minnesota. Our local unit consists of 98 members who are administrative assistants, custodial staff, kitchen staff, and para-educators. This year, the local union members have decided to give back with their member dues. They take pride in their students and have seen them grow and learn from preschool through our graduating seniors, whether in the classroom, on a playground, in a lunchroom, throughout the hallways, after school activities, in the nurse's office, or in our school offices. Not only do they support our schools, they support our students. Union Member Wanda Kupferschmid presented Ian Christenson with the scholarship on behalf of all Perham Support Staff.

    Perham Lions Scholarship

    Perham Lions Club recognizes that the cost of a college education is a major investment. To supplement this investment, Perham Lions Club seeks to honor students who have demonstrated the spirit of volunteerism and leadership by awarding scholarships. Perham Lions Members Nicole Rydell and Jennifer Holzer presented Megan Tellinghuisen and Emily Martinson with a scholarship.

    Perham High School Faculty Scholarship

    Sarah Beack received the scholarship presented on behalf of the Perham High School Faculty and Staff. The scholarship is for students who are entering the field of education.

    BU PEO Award Scholarship

    P.E.O. was formed in 1869 by seven women who were college graduates. They wished to encourage other women to pursue a post secondary education. This organization has grown to over a quarter of a million members in P.E.O. chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada. In Minnesota there are more than 150 chapters representing 6,500 members. I am representing Chapter BU P.E.O. in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Each year our chapter hosts a golf tournament to raise money for scholarships for young women graduating from High School. This year we earned enough money from our golf tournament to give two $1000 scholarships. Eligible candidates for our scholarship must be graduating from a public high school In Otter Tail County, with plans to continue their education at a college or university. We had many wonderful applicants, but two stood out at the top, Audrey Swanson and Megan Tellinghuisen, both from Perham High School. Awarded by Jean McKenzie.

    Ottertail Lions Scholarship

    The Ottertail Lions Club recognizes that the cost of a college education is a major investment.     Bremer Bank Scholarship

    KLN Scholarship

    Lake Region Builders Association Scholarship

    Daniel Zitzow was the recipient of the Lake Region Builders Association Scholarship.

    Lowell Dreyer Memorial Scholarship

    This award was established in 1999 in honor of Lowell Dreyer, a beloved father, husband, friend, and community member that left us all too soon. A scholarship in his name is given to students each year that possess similar traits – a giving spirit, a passion for helping others, and a dedication to community. On behalf of the Dreyer Family, this year's scholarship is awarded to Kally Conlin.

    KLN Community Builder Scholarship

    This award is given to students who are involved in activities, excellent students, and have contributed to the well-being of our school district communities.     First National Bank Scholarship

    The First National Bank - Ottertail Branch seeks to honor and assist individuals who have demonstrated academic and extracurricular ability and leadership and who have shown a spirit of volunteerism by awarding a scholarship to worthy students. Special consideration will be given to students intending to pursue a career in business and finance. This year's award goes to Desiree Roberts.

    East Otter Tail Jaycees Scholarship

    Carson Breitenfeldt Memorial Scholarship

    The Carson Breitenfeldt Memorial Scholarship was established in memory and honor of Carson. Carson was an active, adventurous child full of life. Carson accepted every day as a gift filled with opportunity which he welcomed with open arms. His interests stretched from the indoors to the outdoors, participating in golf, wrestling, baseball, biking, cycling, boating, and more. He had an interest in drawing, art, and science, and a passion for hunting and fishing. Carson's love for life was displayed through his unforgettable smiles, giggles, pranks, and jokes. He was extremely compassionate and kind hearted, taking great pride in helping others and making "all" feel welcomed and included. This year's recipients of the Carson Breitenfeldt Memorial Scholarship are Hannah Ekse and Kally Conlin.

    Tuffy Nelson Memorial Scholarship

    Spanky's Stone Hearth Culinary Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended for any student who attends a post secondary education in the culinary field in a full-time capacity. The scholarship is sponsored by Josh Hanson, owner of Spanky's, and presented to Makayla Melvin.

    Robert Perry Memorial Scholarship

    Robert L. Perry was a long time resident of the Perham area. Robert and his wife, Nellie, were active in the civic affairs of the Perham area. Robert would like to continue to support the Perham area by investing in the development and education of the young people interested in pursuing a secondary education through Vocational/Technical School or 2-year Community College. This year's scholarship was awarded to Sara Guck, Terrell Bellanger, and Aaron Wegscheid.

    Perham Women of Focus Scholarship

    Aaron Wescheid and Megan Tellinghuisen were presented with a scholarship from Women of Focus.

    Perham Health Scholarship

    The Perham Health Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 and awards 6 - $1,000 scholarships each year to students going into a healthcare field. High school seniors or post-secondary students enrolled in either a 2 or 4-year program from the Battle Lake, Frazee, Henning, New York Mills, and Perham school districts can qualify. Awards are given at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, which consists of Perham Health staff managers, Perham Health board members, and community members. Perham Health awarded scholarships to three of our seniors: Megan Tellinghuisen, Emily Martinson, and Kally Conlin - pictured with CEO Chuck Hofius

    Perham Dent School Board Scholarship

    School Board Member Cyndy Huber presented Grace Tangen with a scholarship on behalf of the Perham Dent School Board.

    Perham Area Foundation Scholarship

    The Perham Area Foundation is a community foundation with the mission to provide financial support on projects which will improve the quality of life in and around the community of Perham. The citizens of Perham are the benefactors. Each year, the Perham Area Foundation awards a scholarship to a PHS student chosen anonymously from the applicants received based on two questions: 1. What have you done outside the classroom to make our community a better place to live? 2. What do you feel is needed to make the Perham community an even better place to live and how would that be achieved? PAF President Rich Doll presented Audrey Swanson with this year's PAF scholarship.

    Ottertail Rod & Gun Club Scholarship

    Audrey Swanson was the recipient of the Ottertail Rod & Gun Club Scholarship.

    Workforce Development Scholarship

    Twenty-three area seniors, from Minnesota State Community and Technical College's partnership high schools are being awarded with Workforce Development Scholarships. Each recipient is receiving a minimum of $2,500 generated through our state legislature. Additional scholarship funding has been provided from a number of sources. The M State programs these 23 students have enrolled in include: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, and information technology. Aaron Wegscheid and Rylee Lindquist are each receiving a $2,500 Workforce Development Scholarship, as well as an additional $500 scholarship.     John Merkins Memorial Scholarship

    The John Merkins Memorial Scholarship was established in memory and honor of John by the Perham Fire Department Relief Association. John was an active member of the Perham Fire Department who volunteered his time and talents to Perham and the surrounding communities. Not only did John volunteer his time to the Perham Fire Department but within the fire department. During his time with the fire department, he organized the annual pancake feed, was a truck engineer, and department secretary. John lived his life with a passion for helping family, friends, and the community. John was the guy everyone wanted to be around because he was caring, compassionate and knew the meaning of hard work. John took great pride in helping others. The Perham Fire Department Relief Association is proud to make available the John Merkins Memorial Scholarship. This year's scholarships were awarded to Makayla Melvin and Emily Martinson by Mark Schmidt and Nathan Rooney.

    Dent American Legion Auxillary Scholarship

    This scholarship is intended for a student who attends a post-secondary education facility in a full-time capacity. The student must have a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling who has served or is currently serving in the military. Ian Christenson was awarded this year's Dent American Legion Auxillary Scholarship.

    Frank Family Foundation Scholarship

    The Frank Family Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students that will be pursuing a degree in education. This year's recipients were Sarah Beack, Hannah Ekse, and Makaila Hopwood, presented by Sue Kostynick and Tracy Hein.

    Dent Lions Scholarship

    Dent American Legion Scholarship was awarded to Aaron Wegscheid, Mara Leslie, and Morgan Hanson.

    CEO Program

    This year, the Business Education department received a generous amount of money from an anonymous donor to give two outstanding seniors who are continuing their education to pursue a career in business. John Kostynick and Becky Butenhoff proudly presented Kolbey Bormann and Dawson Honer with scholarships.

    Cory Orvik Memorial Scholarship

    American Legion Post #148 of Dent, MN seeks to honor and assist students that have demonstrated leadership abilities and who have participated in extracurricular activities. Students who have shown such leadership in school and community activities will be awarded a scholarship in honor of Cory Orvik. The scholarship was presented to Daniel Zitzow and Ian Christenson.

    Perham Area Scholarship Fund

    The Perham Area Scholarship Fund, formally known as Dollars for Scholars committee, provides financial assistance and a strong message about the importance of education beyond high school and encourages students to further their education. The Fund utilizes income from permanent funds to ensure perpetual, yearly scholarships. Some awards are also sponsored in the names of individuals, organizations, and businesses.

    The Perham Area Scholarship Fund philosophy is to distribute funds to as many students who plan to further their education as possible. Students become eligible for local awards by submitting an application. The selection process is objective, nondiscriminatory, and makes scholarships available to a wide range of deserving students.
