PHS Alum, Allie Christenson, is entering her senior year at SDSU this fall and has been offered a huge opportunity for an internship in Washington, D.C. this summer. She has accepted a dream internship with the Humane Society’s national headquarters.
Allie graduated in 2014 from Perham High School and went on to South Dakota State University for post-secondary education. She will now be graduating a semester early with two bachelor of science degrees in Advertising with an emphasis in public relations and Journalism with an emphasis in news/editorial, plus a minor in marketing. She was able to complete all of this in just 3.5 years because of all of the college courses she was able to take while enrolled at PHS.
Due to her early graduation, Allie needed to find an internship this summer. She applied to a number of places and was offered a few in the South Dakota area. But she wanted more. She decided to take a chance on her dream internship, and applied to the national headquarters for the Humane Society in Washington D.C. Allie has been a huge animal rights activist since she was very little. While reigning as Miss Perham, Allie was able to compete in the Miss Minnesota Pageant with an Animal Rights platform. She has volunteered for multiple shelters, including the Humane Society and the Marshmallow Foundation. Allie’s dream job after graduation would be to work for the Humane Society, so she had to take a chance and apply for the internship.
Since it is a national organization, there are many students from across the US that apply. Allie was lucky enough to get an interview, and then a second interview came along. With her rich history in speech competition, she was well prepared for the interviews. About a week ago, the call came in with an offer for an internship for the entire summer in their social media department to which Allie graciously accepted.
Allie heads out to DC in early May and will return at the end of August to finish up her last semester of college. This internship will be a great opportunity for her to not only get her foot in the door with the Humane Society, but also give her the opportunity to continue her work as an animal rights activist on a national level.
We love Allie’s story. She not only took advantage of opportunities that were presented to her, but also reached for the stars to create her own opportunities. She is a big dreamer and her passion is evident. Without a doubt, she will make the world a better place.
We’ll be following Allie’s experience throughout the summer, so check back for updates!
